Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) is the founder of Ashtanga Yoga. Ashtanga Yoga means "eight-limbed yoga" outlined in the Yoga Sutras written by the great sage Patanjali. This style of yoga is the inspiration for the majority of vinyasa style yoga classes around the world. Ashtanga is a vigorous athletic flowing practice. The practice produces intense internal heat that creates a strong body and a calm mind. Tradtionally it was taught Mysore style, meaning the student learned the series and practiced the sequence on their own. However, today students can take classes lead by a teacher. The practice is smooth and flowing allowing the practitioner to simply observe what arises in the mind/body with out analyzing or criticizing it. With continued practice the skill of non-attachment is applied to all aspects of a person’s life. This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a set series of poses. The eight limbs of yoga are: Yama [moral codes], Niyama [self-purification and study], Asana [posture], Pranayama [breath control], Pratyahara [sense control], Dharana [concentration], Dhyana [meditation], and Samadhi [contemplation].
