Welcome to the Yoga Journal Ashtanga Yoga Directory page. In this section you will find yoga studios, retreat centers, and teachers who specialize or incorporate Ashtanga Yoga into their practice and philosophy.
Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) is the founder of Ashtanga Yoga. Ashtanga Yoga means "eight-limbed yoga" outlined in the Yoga Sutras written by the great sage Patanjali. This style of yoga is the inspiration for the majority of vinyasa style yoga classes around the world. Ashtanga is a vigorous athletic flowing practice. The practice produces intense internal heat that creates a strong body and a calm mind. Tradtionally it was taught Mysore style, meaning the student learned the series and practiced the sequence on their own. However, today students can take classes lead by a teacher. The practice is smooth and flowing allowing the practitioner to simply observe what arises in the mind/body with out analyzing or criticizing it. With continued practice the skill of non-attachment is applied to all aspects of a person’s life. This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a set series of poses. The eight limbs of yoga are: Yama [moral codes], Niyama [self-purification and study], Asana [posture], Pranayama [breath control], Pratyahara [sense control], Dharana [concentration], Dhyana [meditation], and Samadhi [contemplation].
When you enroll in an Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training with us you will also be part of a seva project (selfless service). We support the local school in El Ostional as well as assisting an environmental organisation, Paso Pasifico, in saving the sea turtles. The beach in Ostional is one of the few places on the planet where the Paslama Turtles come every year to nest and we need people like you to make it safe.

We are proud to share with any of you considering our training that Body Language has been voted best Yoga studio 9 years in a row in the metro Detroit area. Our students have voiced that their votes have been in large part due to the warm, friendly environment as well as the caliber of teachers who guide them through their practices and offer them individual attention and support. In fact our teacher training program includes many of our staff who are experts in a variety of fields including a physical therapist who offers our anatomy segments, a Ph.D in psychology who offers several segments on using yoga as a tool to deal with anxiety and depression and a Registered Dietitian who helps students understand the link between nutrition, weight management and yoga. Lastly our training is divided into two 100 hour segments...1/2 in the fall and 1/2 in the spring...allowing students more time to absorb the information. Would love to have you join our training!

Krishnamacharya, an individualized approach to each student is at the heart of this training. During your time with us, you will learn how to teach or deepen your own practice in many different forms of hatha yoga. Rather than mold you into our style, we believe it is important to support you in discovering your own unique style and path in your yoga journey.
Since 2010, our Ashtanga yoga teacher training program has trained yoga lovers from all around the world and certified hundreds of them to teach yoga classes with safety and confidence. Devotion to the practice of yoga and the desire to share with and give back to the world are what motivate the teachings of Maya Yoga founders Nicki Doane and Eddie Modestini. Maya Yoga is the "unsystem" of yoga; Maya means "illusion" in Sanskrit, so it is never what you think it will be!
Eddie and Nicki have developed an approach to yoga that is intent on serving the individual student. As Eddie and Nicki teach, they inspire people to recognize the profound connection between the self and spirit. In Maya Yoga, the practice is the teacher.
